Château Ferriere

Château Ferrière was founded in the 18th century by Gabriel Ferriere, within the wine area of Margaux. Gabriel was a naval broker, as well as an officer of the king, in charge of the hunting sector. The vineyards initially planted by Gabriel were progressively expanded by his cousin Jean, mayor of Bordeaux, in 1792. The ownership of the winery passed on to his son Michel and, then, to his cousin Henry Ferriere, who sold it in 1913 to Armand Feuillerat, former owner of Château Marquis de Terme.
Mrs Durand, daughter and heir of Armand Feuillerat, left the Château to her children who, in 1952, rented the vineyards to Alexis Lichine, owner of Château Lascombes, who has been managing the vineyard since. In 1988 Jacques Merlaut, whose family already owned Château Chasse-Spleen, La Gurgue and Haut-Bages Liberal, bought the vineyards and the castle, but it was only in 1992 that the lease with the Château Lascombes ended, giving life thus the first vintage produced by Jacques' daughter, Bernadette Villars-Merlaut. Claire Villars then took over from her mother Bernadette, and since 2000 she has been managing Château Ferriere.
Most of the vineyards now spread over an area of about 20 hectares, and grow in the center of the Margaux appellation, on a plateau of about 12 km² characterized by a subsoil composed of deep white gravel.
In the vineyard we find predominantly cabernet sauvignon and merlot, but a small portion of the area is devoted to petit verdot and cabernet franc. In 2015 the Château Ferrière obtained the certification for "Agriculture Biologique", continuing then, in 2018 and 2019, with the Demeter and Biodyvin biodynamic certifications.
This choice is the result of the awareness of having inherited an exceptional terroir, which needs to be protected and made sustainable thanks to organic, careful and balanced winegrowing practices.
This is how unique wines are born, where, in addition to the Grand Cru Classé of Margaux, we also find two other wines, "La Dame de Ferriere" and "Les Rempats", that best describe the most classic characteristics of the Bordeaux blend.
